Scary part of the trip....John took the photo of course.

On September 21st, we went on a trip to Durango, Colorado with John and Sonja Black. We were gone for 4 days and saw such beautiful scenery and had so much fun. Originally, John wanted to take me to Hanksville and show me where and what they were doing over there when he worked there. So, we asked the Blacks' to go and they had never been to Durango to ride the train, so we decided to go there too and ride the train again. We went over through Escalante and saw lots of beautiful scenery there and to Capital Reef. Then we ate at Stan's Burger Shack in Hanksville. A gal from Cedar was working there. They had such large milkshakes that we had to throw half of it away. We passed by the northern edge of Lake Powell, Hite Marina, and it was beautiful. It took us 13 hours to get to Durango from Cedar. Of course, we had plenty of stops along the way. The next day we rode the train. It was a chilly day and so we were glad that John Black had reserved us an inside car on the train. I had forgotten how scary one part of the trip was. I had to get on the other side of the train and keep praying that we wouldn't go over the ledge. When we got to Silverton, we ate and shopped around a little and then rode the train back to Durango. The next day we rode back up to Silverton in the car and then down to the town of Ouray, which is known as the Switzerland of the USA. It is a beautiful little town completely surrounded by mountains, like a Swiss Village. Then on down another scary road to Montrose, Colorado, where we ate Mexican food. We took a scenic road off I-70 to Moab where we stayed that night. It followed the Colorado River and it was beautiful. The next day, we went to Arches National Park and Dead Horse Point. We then went back up to I-70 and came home through Richfield. The Blacks showed us where they used to live there. We visited with John Misel on his front lawn and he told us our good friend, Ralph Lamoreaux was in pretty bad shape from a fall. We got home that night about 8 p.m. It was a wonderful trip.

We were laughing so hard, trying to steady gumby on a bunch of beer boxes that I think we made the clerk behind the counter mad. She probebly thought we were laughing at her or something, anyway, she wasn't very friendly when we checked out!
